The application period for the 2024-25 GEN-PINC scholarship is open, apply here: 2024-25 Gen-PINC Application
Priority application deadline is June 9th - applications received afterwards will still be reviewed and considered if space permits.
What is the GEN-PINC Scholarship?
In August of 2020, the Genentech Foundation has graciously awarded the PINC program a $580,750 grant that provides scholarship opportunities for students
This GEN-PINC grant will provide scholarships and mentor support to 10 PINC students starting the Fall of 2020. Selected students in the program will receive monetary and academic support as well as professional development instruction. 1st year GEN-PINC scholars receive $300/month and 2nd year scholars receive $700/month.
Through the GEN-PINC program, scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to collaborate on projects with researchers from industries and other academic institutions such as Genentech, IBM, and Stanford. Through these projects, students will be able to strengthen their computational training, receive mentorships, and establish professional relationships in preparation for careers post-graduation.
Thank you to the PIs who submitted this grant (Anagha Kulkarni, Ilmi Yoon, and Pleuni Pennings) and Genentech for the generous award!

2024-2025 GEN-PINC Scholar Spotlight
Nathalie
Receiving the Gen-PINC scholarship allows me to fully put my focus towards my education. I recognize that it is a great privilege to be able to fully dedicate my time and effort toward developing myself as a scientist through my research and education through this scholarship.
Gurleen
Learning to code has always been a goal of mine, but without prior knowledge in computer programming, I was hesitant to pursue it. But the PINC program is specially designed for biology, chemistry or biochemistry majors which makes it an excellent fit for me.
Lidia
I am most excited about receiving computational training because being able to say I know how to code is a dream of mine. I am also looking forward to meeting other scholars who have similar stories and are also taking a chance to learn a new skill and maybe work together.
Junyoung
Being awarded this scholarship is a kind of recognition of what I have done so far, and it’s the first time that somebody, or some organization, recognizing me, so it showed me that what I have done so far isn’t wrong. I hope my ML skills contribute to the world in a good way.
Andre
This scholarship means a lot of great things for me. The scholarship allows me to dedicate more time in the coding community in STEM. It aligns with my goals to become a physician-scientist in which I will utilize a lot of these skills in the field.
Leinad
I see a growing need for computational skills in my field. Gaining hands-on experience with Python, data analysis, and machine learning will allow me to analyze biological data more effectively and contribute to innovations in biotechnology.
Aaron
The Gen-PINC program gives me the opportunity to get a minor in CS as well as build a network of colleagues and mentors to help guide me in my future. I was nervous to take CS courses as they looked at as hard to learn but I have felt guided in my process to learning python.
Mark
When I learned about Gen-PINC, it seemed to really foster growth and support CoSE students who are learning to code. Participating in the PINC program gives me the opportunity to diversify my skillset beyond the lab, which is important as biotech shifts more in the direction of AI.
Tenzing
With the extra load being taken off from my shoulders I am able to focus more on school and pursue higher studies. Taking PINC as a minor was definitely something that I had on mind but now being a scholarship recipient, it has given me more drive to excel in it.
Jessie
I'm excited that SFSU has a program like PINC. At my previous university, I considered taking a minor in computer science, but it always seemed super intimidating. So, it's amazing that SFSU has a computational program geared toward bio and chemistry/biochemistry students.
Faith
Receiving the Gen-PINC scholarship means a lot because often times we doubt our capabilities and forget we can do way more than we think. My goal is to aid and give back to people, so having a tech background can expand my career pallet to be able to access more opportunities to do so.

Receiving this scholarship is an acknowledgment of my hard work and dedication. It provides me with confidence and motivation to continue striving for success in the PINC program. Personally, it is a meaningful step towards achieving my goals as a first-generation immigrant pursuing higher education in the U.S.
Carlos
This scholarship means a lot to me because it helps me gain a higher understanding of how machine learning is used in the professional world, specifically in the biotech industry. It means a lot to be a part of the future generation of Data Scientists that feel empowered to succeed with the help of Gen-PINC program.
Victor
Receiving the Gen-PINC scholarship is deeply meaningful to me, as a first-generation college student from a Mexican immigrant family who has faced financial pressures, housing insecurity, and the need to support my family while balancing academics. This scholarship is a powerful acknowledgment of the resilience it’s taken to pursue my dreams.
